  • What type of wax do you use and why?
We are currently using 100% sustainable soy wax in all of our candles. In the future we may add a coconut/soy wax blend. We are committed to pouring the cleanest candles possible. We source fragrance oils that are specifically made for 100% soy wax to get maximum scent throw. Most candles today are made of paraffin wax which creates highly toxic benzene and toluene when burned (both are known carcinogens). In fact, the toxins released from paraffin candles are the same as those found in diesel fuel fumes and are linked to asthma and lung cancer. The big candle brands use paraffin wax or a soy/paraffin wax blend to get a robust scent throw.
  • Do your wicks have metal in them?
No. As we are committed to pouring the cleanest candles possible, we only use lead-free, 100% cotton wicks, encouraging a clean and aromatic burn.
  • What kind of oils do you use?
We only formulate our fragrances with ingredients approved by the International Fragrance Association (“IFRA”). IFRA is the Switzerland-based global representative body of the fragrance industry. Its main purpose is to ensure that fragrance ingredients are safe for consumers and the environment. It does this with a team of dermatologists, pathologists, environmental scientists, and toxicologists. We use oils that are a blend of essential oils, natural fragrance oils, and a minimal amount of synthetic fragrance oils. Our fragrances are always phthalate free and are rated to throw a scent with soy wax.
  • What is Alcohol Denat. and is it safe?
For any type of spray, once a fragrance formula has been devised, the raw materials need to be added to a carrier. Perfumer's alcohol acts as a base material that “carries” the scent. An alcohol-based carrier carries the scent further versus an oil-based carrier. Perfumer's alcohol typically has a very high alcohol content, often around 95% to 99% ethanol (ethyl alcohol), making it sanitizing. The high alcohol concentration helps to efficiently dissolve and disperse fragrance oils and other aromatic ingredients. Perfumer's alcohol is specially denatured, which means bitterants are added to make the alcohol undrinkable. Researchers found that of some types of alcohol, ethanol was the one best tolerated on your skin. Ethyl alcohol is unlikely to cause severe, toxic effects, but it can cause irritation and dryness.
  • Is there a right way to burn a candle?
Yes! We have a link on our website that explains the do's and don'ts of candle burning. We want you to enjoy your Bougie Beach Candles to the max, so we'll go ahead and put the Candle Care instructions right here for you: 1. Trim the wick. Every. Single. Time. Each time you want to burn your candle, start by trimming the wick to between 1/8 and 1/4 inches long, and remove any debris. Trimmed wicks will give you a cleaner, brighter burn. 2. Let the wax melt all the way across. Extinguishing a candle before it has a chance to melt to the sides of the container will create a “memory ring.” Once a candle has a “memory ring,” it will continue to tunnel for the life of the candle. 3. In general, it is recommended that candles do not burn for longer than 4 hours and cool for at least 2 hours before relighting. 4. Keep the flame away from moving air. Moving air can disturb the flame, leading to unsightly black marks on the inside of the container. 5. Store candles in a cool, dark and dry place with the lid on to keep them clean of dust and debris, and to help protect the wax and fragrance. Highly fragrant candles have a life span of 6 to 12 months, depending on the scent. 6. When the candle wax has burned down to 1/2", please discontinue use. Scoop out the wax and wick, pop into the dishwasher, and re-purpose your container. CAUTION: Do not leave candles burning unattended. Keep away from children and pets. Keep away from flammable materials. Ensure candle is placed on a heat proof surface. Do not move the candle when lit.
  • Do I really have to put something under a burning candle or a reed diffuser?
We highly recommend that you do for the following reason, you could damage your surface. Both the heat from a burning candle and drips from a reed diffuser can damage a surface...ANY SURFACE! Here at Bougie Beach, we do not want you to have any bad experiences, so we made it simple for you by adding coasters and trays to our website. Please take advantage of it, and do not learn the hard way the way we did.
