Why The Evil Eye Bead?

You may notice a common trait among our bracelets. That's right - it's our signature Turkish Evil Eye, but it’s much more than just a simple design feature.

The Evil Eye bead is a symbol of the foundation on which everything else is built--protecting your energy.

The Evil Eye

The tradition of the evil eye dates back almost 3,000 years to Mesopotamia. It is one of the most symbolic images in the world. It is also found in many smaller folk and indigenous beliefs as well. The Evil Eye is an old superstition stemming back to ancient traditions from across the world, such as Greek, Roman, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, and Buddhist cultures.

Across cultures, the evil eye is essentially a curse passed on from one individual to another through an envious or malicious gaze. A person with immense success, beauty, or wealth is more likely to attract jealousy than anyone else. And that gaze jinxes the victim, cursing them with terrible luck and misery, and in some cases, may illicit injury or death.

To prevent the curse, many cultures around the world utilize certain charms or amulets, such as the Nazar (evil eye) Amulet. It is believed that wearing a talisman with evil eye beads protects against evil forces.

The Turkish Evil Eye

For over 75 years, Kurudere, a village located in Izmir on the Aegean coast, has been renowned for its bead workshops. To honor the evil eye bead production in the region, in 2009, the name of the village was changed to Nazarköy -- evil eye beads are called "nazar boncuğu" in Turkish. The glassmakers fire the glass beads in kilns made of bricks and mud. They're made out of beautiful blue glass, layered with white, light blue, and black, and shaped with thin and thick iron tools to resemble an eye.

The Evil Eye's colors are not just aesthetics, they are gateways to a world of protection, positivity, and wisdom. The most iconic color of Evil Eye, blue, symbolizes protection. It is believed to reflect the evil intent back to the onlooker. Blue, particularly a deep cobalt hue, is also associated with calm and relaxation, evoking a sense of peace and tranquility.

The Signature Evil Eye Bead

Our Turkish Evil Eye beads are handcrafted in Turkey by glassmakers who dedicate themselves to this art.  The beads are made by layering the different colors of glass, so they are not flat. This is how you can tell the authentic beads from the many copies you can find on the market.

We chose to use the iconic cobalt blue Evil Eye, symbolizing protection. The power of blue radiates positive energy and symbolizes good karma.
